Giovanni Pierluigi da Palestrina. Undoubtedly one of the most recognisable musical figures of the 16th Century. But do we know the true composer, or a 21st century parody? Follow the L’Isola social media and digital platforms as we explore the less familiar works of Palestrina during the anniversary year of his birth (2025).

In 2024 L’Isola & Cambridge Early Music Consort partnered with Chelmsford Cathedral to create a new and bespoke Church of England service format. Having successfully integrated such a venture, this service now takes place in the cathedral each Tuesday evening and involves a staggering 5-6 pieces of pre-1600 polyphony amongst readings and prayers. This format is completely unique across the United Kingdom, and provides an astonishing opportunity for liturgy and music to function in synergy.

It was in this environment that L’Isola were able to embark on a project to perform - and record - the entirety of Palestrina’s works. This process will culminate at the end of 2025 (which is most likely 500 years since the birth of Palestrina himself…) and will allow for a full academic study on Palestrina’s oeuvre following the conclusion.
