“Time stands still”, by John Dowland (1603), is emblematic of the sense of wonder we feel when encountering pure, often unattainable beauty. This suspension of time is also strived for in musical performance - as described in the 16th century, the goal is to transport listeners “into so pleasurable a melancholy that … they remain deprived of all senses save that of hearing …”. L’Isola, a vocal ensemble under the direction of Matthew Gouldstone join forces with lutenist Peter Croton to transport listeners into a timeless journey through English & Italian music from the early 17th century.
